City Council launches new arts prize and creative cash awards
A new arts prize has been launched by Aberdeen City Council to herald the opening of the latest round of artistic bursaries.
The ‘Made In Aberdeen’ prize will be awarded for the “Best collaboration between arts and business” in Aberdeen, in conjunction with Northern Star Business Awards.
‘Made In Aberdeen’ is a City Council initiative to support creative talent through artists’ bursaries, commissions and showcase films. Working with the Chamber of Commerce, the City Council has created the new prize to highlight the opportunities available to artists and business through collaboration.
Nominations are now open via the Northern Star Business Awards website http://www.agcc.co.uk/nsba-2012/.
Thurs 12 March sees the opening of the ‘Made In Aberdeen’ Artists’ Bursaries scheme for 2015. Five awards of up to £2,000 are up for grabs for artists working in any art form to support, create and develop new work, participate in professional development opportunities such as residencies or training courses, and to facilitate new collaborations.
Last year’s supported artists included dancer and choreographer Katie Milroy, performer Lesley-Ann Hastie, designer Mhairi McDowell, musician Frauke Jurgensen and musician and composer Simon Gall.
Simon, who received support to develop a new North- east influenced music project ‘Clype’, said of the award: “The ‘Made in Aberdeen’ bursary brought this project into existence. I had an initial seed idea for a while but had no financial resources to develop it so it never grew into anything.
“The award enabled me to get the sound I was looking for through enlisting the musical services of the wonderful Jonny Hardie. It also meant that I could take my time in the studio to focus on creating quality music rather than taking shortcuts.”
City Council Deputy Leader Councillor Marie Boulton said: “It is vitally important to support local talent and these awards ensure North-east artists receive the backing to develop their work, helping Aberdeen build its cultural profile and growing our creative economy. Last year we supported some really exciting artists and I can’t wait to see the work that is produced as a result of this year’s funding.
“We’re particularly excited to be working with the Chamber of Commerce to recognise the value that artistic practice can bring to the business sector, and we hope that this is an area that will continue to grow over the next few years.”
Artists’ proposals for the Made In Aberdeen bursaries are accepted through an open application process. Guidelines and applications are available to download from the Vibrant Aberdeen link below.
Alternatively can be requested by emailing [email protected] or calling 01224 522341.
The deadline for applications is midnight, Thursday 30 April 2015.
