Hanover Street School pupils up for eco-award

Pupils from an Aberdeen primary school are in the running for a national award after producing a time-travel inspired film warning about the future of the environment.

In Doomed?, an eight-minute movie, the children build a time machine to go back through the ages to see the impact humans have had on the world.

The group of 22 primary one pupils at Hanover Street School completed the project in tandem with a recycling drive which has raised hundreds of pounds for the Mary’s Meals charity.

The Aberdeen team have emerged as Scottish winners in the UK-wide TOTAL Green Schools Award 2015.

A group of six pupils – whose names were drawn from a hat – will travel to London with staff on Tuesday 23 June, where a grand prize of £5,000 will be presented to the overall winner in a ceremony at London Zoo.

The TOTAL Green Schools Awards is a UK-wide environmental competition for 5-11 year olds run by the Young People’s Trust for the Environment (YPTE).

It is not the first time that Hanover Street School has enjoyed success in the competition sponsored by the French energy giant.

In 2012, the school got ‘Totally Active’ and laid a new grass area on what had previously been a muddy path on the edge of the school playground. The pupils raised more than £6,000 from the sale of handbags and jewellery items made from recycled materials and won a £500 prize.

Teacher Elizabeth Elrick said: “I didn’t think for a minute that we would be successful for a second time, but I suppose each entry is judged on its merits.

“This is something that the primary one pupils have been working on for a whole year; they wanted to make a film about what can be done to look after the world.

“They came up with the idea for a time machine and have since learned a lot about the environment, about the importance of trees, oxygen and the rainforest.

“We are all just delighted to be the Scottish champions, as far as we are concerned that is enough, if anything else happens in London then that will be a bonus.”

Aberdeen City Council’s Convener of Education and Children’s Services, Councillor Angela Taylor, said: “This is a fantastic project that the primary one pupils at Hanover Street School have come up with, and fully deserving of success in the competition.

“It is great to see the young people take such an interest in the world around them, and we will be keeping our fingers crossed on June 23 that they can bring the grand prize back to Aberdeen.”
