North Sea Region

Accelerating the adoption of hydrogen as an alternative energy solution, the Hydrogen Transport Economy (HyTrEc) project has been working to deliver a hydrogen strategy for Europe's North Sea Region.

The EU strategy was developed to inform and shape the progress of infrastructure, technology, skills and financial instruments, for hydrogen based technologies. The project was  led by Aberdeen and developed through a collaborative approach of transnational partners from the UK, Germany, Denmark, Belgium, Norway, and Sweden.

National

Achieving a sustainable approach to transportation is a key element in meeting the challenge of Scotland's emission reduction targets and making the transition to a low carbon economy.

Recognising this, Aberdeen is coordinated the development of a strategy for the development of new infrastructure and learning to support hydrogen technologies, on behalf of the Scottish Cities Alliance. This is a collaboration of Scotland's seven cities which aims to optimise contributions to economic growth.

Aberdeen City Region

The Aberdeen Strategy Framework 2020 was launched at All-Energy the UK's largest renewable energy event, in May 2013.

This was followed in March 2015 by the Hydrogen Strategy for the Aberdeen City Region 2015-2025 a more detailed 10 year strategy outlining the key actions required to ensure Aberdeen remains at the forefront of hydrogen technology.

Hydrogen offers an exciting opportunity to develop and diversify the energy industry in the north east of Scotland, maximising the capacity and value of renewable energy and giving greater energy security.

Strategy Cover

The strategy sets a vision for securing Aberdeen's place as a centre of excellence in hydrogen technologies and reinforcing the area's position as an energy city now and in the future. It focuses on promoting hydrogen technologies as a low carbon alternative to fossil fuels across several key objectives including:

  • Increasing vehicle deployments from a range of local stakeholders;
  • Building an accessible, convenient and safe refuelling infrastructure network;
  • Increasing the production and use of  green hydrogen derived from renewable energy sources;
  • Exploring options for non-transport applications including stationary power;
  • Increasing opportunities for the local supply chain and business development;
  • Expansion and diversification of the energy industry, making use of transferable oil and gas expertise and infrastructure.

Aberdeen's hydrogen strategy development is taking place in parallel with the strategy for the North Sea Region, being developed as part of the HyTrEc project. HyTrEc is part of the Interreg IVB North Sea Region Programme and is partly-funded by the European Regional Development Fund.
