Twinning Aberdeen collaborates with partners within other departments and services across Aberdeen City Council and external organisations operating in Aberdeen.
Education, Culture & Sport
Education
Twinning works with the Education Service to increase the awareness of international cultures and languages and foster new and existing international links. This work is vital to the element of 'Global Citizenship' within the Curriculum for Excellence. By allowing local school children access and exchange with pupils from the twin cities, or from other international links, it encourages the uptake of a second language, increases global awareness and understanding of other cultures. These benefits combine to produce young people who are more employable within Aberdeen and Scotland and provide a stronger work force able to work in a global arena.
During meetings with universities there is a common problem that there are more incoming students to Aberdeen than there are outgoing students. Encouraging outward study exchanges through twin city projects is a step towards resolving this particular problem. Scotland and Aberdeen City are seen by our twin cities as a leader for teaching and the education system. Twin city and international exchanges also benefit teachers who wish to continue their professional development, using the experience to inspire their teaching and pupils to become more interested in other cultures and languages.
Culture
Both the culture and economic teams are working jointly for the benefit of Aberdeen City and increasing the number of opportunities available for communities and Aberdeen institutions to become involved in twin city projects, as well as enhancing festivals and events within Aberdeen City.
Sport
We actively encourage Aberdeen City sports groups to approach us with ideas for twinning and international projects. Through sporting links and exchanges, coaches and players can exchange best practice, share coaching techniques and enhance tournaments.
