Twinning Agreement signed 1990
Gomel is the second largest city in Belarus and is located in the south eastern part of the country, around 188 miles from Minsk. It has a population of around 492,000 people. The main industries of Gomel are agriculture, machine tools, forestry and food industries.
Gomel was deeply affected by the Chernobyl disaster in 1986 and many of the twinning projects with Aberdeen reflect this with the development of medical and educational projects. Cultural exchanges have also been cultivated over the years.
