Twinning Agreement signed 1990
Stavanger is a city and municipality within the county Rogaland, Norway. It has a population of around 126,000 people and is the third largest urban area within Norway. Stavanger is known as the 'Petroleum Capital of Norway' after the discovery of oil and gas in the North Sea in 1969. The city was selected as the European Capital of Culture in 2008.
Aberdeen and Stavanger have a lot in common: Both have a long maritime history of fishing and fish processing; and both share the huge success of the oil and gas industry in the North Sea.
Stavanger gifts the citizens of Aberdeen with a Christmas Tree every year in commemoration of the twinning agreement between the two cities. Aberdeen City celebrates this with a public ceremony in which the tree is lit during the Aberdeen Winter Festival.
