Twinning Agreement signed 1955
Regensburg is a beautiful ancient imperial city based in Bavaria, Germany, and is surrounded by the Danube and Regen rivers. The large medieval centre was made an UNESCO World Heritage Site in July 2006. Regensburg calls itself 'Germany's best preserved medieval city'.
Regensburg became a prosperous city from salt production, but most of the 150,000 population are now employed in the main industries of electronics, car manufacturing (namely BMW), mechanical engineering, biotechnology, IT, beer brewing, printing and publishing.
When the twinning link with Regensburg was first established, it was based predominantly on education exchanges from Aberdeen City schools. Programmes today include school exchanges, the participation of music groups at city events, sports teams' exchanges and cultural projects between cities.
